What does retrigger mean in free spins?
A retrigger in free spins means winning additional free spins while the bonus round is already active. Instead of ending when the original spins are used, the feature extends and gives you another set of spins. The extra spins may come from landing a specific scatter symbol, reaching a bonus meter, or triggering a feature during the round.
The number of added spins depends on the slot’s rules. A game might award five, ten, or more spins, while some titles add spins without a fixed limit. Retriggers can also change the bonus multiplier, unlock extra symbols, or activate a different reel layout.
Australian players will usually see these terms explained in the game’s information panel or promotion rules. Before playing with AUD, check whether the free spins apply to selected games, whether winnings have wagering requirements, and whether the offer is available in your state or territory.
How a free-spin retrigger works
Suppose a slot awards ten free spins. During spin seven, you land the required scatter combination and receive five extra spins. Your remaining three spins are combined with the five new ones, leaving eight spins in the feature. This is the basic meaning of a free-spin retrigger.
Some games use a different system. The feature may reset a multiplier, add symbols to the reels, or award a fixed number of spins each time scatters appear. The paytable and bonus information screen are the most reliable sources because the mechanic differs between providers.
Retrigger versus an initial bonus
An initial free-spin bonus is the event that starts the feature. It may be triggered by landing three or more scatter symbols in the base game, using a promotional code, or meeting a casino offer’s terms. A retrigger happens after the free-spin mode has already begun.
The distinction matters when reading promotional conditions. A casino may advertise ten free spins, but the slot itself could allow further in-game extensions. Those additional spins might follow the game’s standard rules rather than the promotion’s headline amount.
For example, a welcome offer may award free spins on a particular slot, with winnings subject to a 35x wagering requirement. A retrigger increases the number of opportunities to win, but it does not automatically remove wagering rules or make the resulting balance withdrawable.
What to check in the terms
Look for the eligible game, expiry period, minimum deposit, maximum stake, and whether the spins are credited automatically. Some offers limit the contribution of free-spin winnings toward wagering, while others convert winnings into bonus funds that cannot be withdrawn until turnover is completed.
It is also useful to check how a retriggered spin is treated. The extra spins may carry the same stake and prize rules as the original feature, or the game may apply its own conditions. A slot’s theoretical return and volatility can help explain likely behaviour, but neither predicts a specific result.

Reading slot symbols and feature rules
The word “retrigger” may appear alongside “scatter,” “bonus symbol,” “extra spins,” or “free-spin extension.” In many slots, only scatters trigger another round, while ordinary wild symbols contribute to a winning combination but do not extend the feature.
Pay attention to whether scatters pay during the bonus. Some games award a prize for each scatter, while others use them only to grant more spins. The rules may also state that a retrigger is unavailable after a certain number of extensions or that a special jackpot feature replaces the usual award.
Retriggers and Australian casino play
Australia has a distinctive regulatory environment. The Australian Communications and Media Authority can act against illegal offshore gambling services, and online casino products are treated differently from sports wagering. A site’s marketing presence does not by itself establish that it is licensed to offer every product in Australia.
Players in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and elsewhere should verify age, identity, payment and location requirements before depositing. AUD support can reduce currency-conversion uncertainty, but banking availability and transaction fees still depend on the provider and payment method. Promotions can also change quickly around major sporting events and public holidays.
If a mobile casino app is part of the decision, usability and security deserve attention alongside the bonus. For gambling, use only official download channels and avoid modified application files.
Making a sensible decision about free spins
A retrigger can increase the length of a bonus round, but it is not a guarantee of profit. The outcome remains determined by the game’s random number generator, volatility and paytable. Treat free spins as promotional entertainment rather than a way to recover losses.
Before joining a promotion, compare the headline offer with its conditions and set a spending limit in AUD.
